Michael Schirber, writing in "Live Science" in 2005: "Since the late 1960s, much of the North Atlantic Ocean has become less salty, in part due to increases in fresh water runoff induced by global warming."
And Catherine Brahic in the "New Scientist" this year: "The surface waters of the North Atlantic are getting saltier, suggests a new study of records spanning over 50 years. They found that during this time, the layer of water that makes up the top 400 metres has gradually become saltier. The seawater is probably becoming saltier due to global warming."
Yeah, right. And I dare say England's defeat by Croatia was down to climate change, as well.
This will be a short page, because although The GOS probably feels more strongly about the great Global Warming hoax than any other single question, he doesn't want this to become a single-issue website. There are enough of those on the net already.
But on the other hand, some things just have to be said, so He's going to say them (notice the capital "H". Al Bloody Gore's got a Nobel Peace Prize for skimming £50 million off the world's gullibility, so The GOS is putting in His bid for divine status as well). So, briefly …
• Reported yesterday that Herr Pope von Benedict's New Year address to the Catholic faithful will include a fairly swingeing attack on Global Warming alarmists. He's going to say that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology, that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters are nothing more than scare-mongering, and that we are reaching the point where the welfare of animals and plants is given a greater priority than that of mankind.
• The photo of two polar bears stranded on a melting iceberg is a fake: it was taken three years ago in high summer.
We are repeatedly warned that if the planet continues to overheat at the present rate, within four decades our biggest carnivore will be extinct, starved to death as its natural hunting grounds disappear. The campaign group Polar Bears International claims that the bear population has fallen by 22% 1987. "If we lose the sea ice, we're going to lose the bears," says their spokesman Dr.Andrew.
But the scientific study on which this claim is based said different. Al Gore quotes it as saying that polar bears are being killed swimming long distances to find ice that has melted away because of global warming. In fact, the study by Monnett & Gleason (2005) mentioned only four dead bears which had died in an exceptional storm with high winds and waves in the Beaufort Sea. The amount of sea ice in the Beaufort Sea has grown over the past 30 years, and a report for the World Wide Fund for Nature shows that polar bears, which are warm-blooded, have grown in numbers where temperature has increased, and have become fewer where temperature has fallen. Polar bears evolved from brown bears 200,000 years ago, and survived the last interglacial period, when global temperature was 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the present and there was probably no Arctic ice-cap at all. The real threat to polar bears is not "global warming" but hunting. In 1940, there were just 5,000 polar bears worldwide. Now that hunting is controlled, there are 25,000.
• A prominent member of the United Nations IPCC Expert Reviewers' Panel has called for the IPCC to be thoroughly reviewed and overhauled. Dr.Vincent Gray writes "I have been an "Expert Reviewer" for the IPCC right from the start and I have submitted a very large number of comments on their drafts. It has recently been revealed that I submitted 1,898 comments on the Final Draft of the current Report. I began with a belief in scientific ethics, that scientists would answer queries honestly, that scientific argument would take place purely on the basis of facts, logic and established scientific and mathematical principles.
Right from the beginning I have had difficulty with this procedure. Penetrating questions often ended without any answer. Comments on the IPCC drafts were rejected without explanation, and attempts to pursue the matter were frustrated indefinitely.
… I have been forced to the conclusion that for significant parts of the work of the IPCC, the data collection and scientific methods employed are unsound. Resistance to all efforts to try and discuss or rectify these problems has convinced me that normal scientific procedures are not only rejected by the IPCC, but that this practice is endemic, and was part of the organisation from the very beginning. I therefore consider that the IPCC is fundamentally corrupt. The only "reform" I could envisage, would be its abolition.
The two main "scientific" claims of the IPCC are the claim that "the globe is warming" and "Increases in carbon dioxide emissions are responsible". Evidence for both of these claims is fatally flawed.
1. No average temperature of any part of the earth's surface, over any period, has ever been made.
2. The sample is grossly unrepresentative of the earth's surface, mostly near to towns. No statistician could accept an "average" based on such a poor sample.
The other flagship set of data promoted by the IPCC are the figures showing the increase in atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. They have manipulated the data in such a way to persuade us (including most scientists) that this concentration is constant throughout the atmosphere. In order to do this, they refrain from publishing any results which they do not like, and they have suppressed no less than 90,000 measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide made in the last 150 years. Some of these were made by Nobel Prizewinners and all were published in the best scientific journals.
The disappearance of the IPCC in disgrace is not only desirable but inevitable. Sooner or later all of us will come to realise that this organisation, and the thinking behind it, is phony."
• A British court recently found that there were nine significant errors or areas of untruth in Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" which the government are insisting all schoolchildren should be forced to watch.
However, anti-Global Warming campaigner Viscount Monckton has done better. He lists no less than thirty-five errors, distortions or just plain porkies. The one we liked best was the claim that pied flycatchers are in danger because they can't find caterpillars to feed their young. It was illustrated in the film by a picture of a black tern eating a fish.
• Meanwhile a 15-year-old American schoolgirl, Kristen Byrnes, has been doing exactly the same. Her thorough-going and logical exposé of Gore's dishonest propaganda is well worth reading. I mean, for GOS's sake, if an American schoolgirl can see through it …

RIGHT! Rant over. Now we can get back to some really serious moaning. Did you know that in Lancashire five police civilian officials have been suspended for not calibrating speed cameras properly, letting hundreds of motorists off the hook?
Not sure whether to be pleased they've got found out and punished, or happy that they got it wrong so innocent motorists can spend a little more this Christmas …
